AWARDS

Since 1986, The Pinellas Braille Group has awarded scholarships and recognition awards to visually impaired students in Pinellas County. The Mildred Shavlan Awards were conceived to recognize visually impaired students who distinguish themselves in class and in Life. Vision teachers nominate students for this award. It usually comes with a monetary award as well as a Certificate presented at the year end school awards ceremonies in each school.

In addition, the Pinellas Council of the Blind provides for awards in two categories, grades 6-8 and 9-12. Students are asked to show their scholarly proficiency for these awards.

The St. Pete Lions Club offers scholarships annually to help graduating seniors  transition to college. These scholarships are administered by the Pinellas Braille Group.

We also wish to recognize outstanding vision teachers in our county and so we established the Guiding Light Award given annually to a vision teacher in Pinellas County.
