MILDRED SHAVLAN ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

In 1986 The Pinellas Braille Group, Inc. established the Mildred Shavlan Achievement Award Fund to recognize Mrs. Shavlan’s many years of service to visually impaired students. Since 1957 when the Pinellas Braille Group, Inc. was formed Mrs. Shavlan taught braille to volunteers and transcribed many textbooks used by visually impaired students throughout the county and state.

 

The award is presented annually to visually impaired students attending grades six through twelve in Pinellas County. Emphasis is placed on educational achievement, mobility, development of independent living skills and social behavior during the present year. The merit of the student is not influenced by race, sex, religion or financial status. it is the intent of the Pinellas Braille Group and the award committee that the award be given by the teacher to the student at the school’s Award Assembly at the end of the school year.

ST. PETERSBURG LION'S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

In 2017-2018, The Pinellas Braille Group, Inc. and the St. Petersburg Lions Club established the St. Petersburg Lions Club Scholarship. This educational scholarship may be awarded annually to one qualified graduating high school senior who is a Florida resident, part of the PCS VI program, and plans to continue his/her education. Scholarship awards will be sent directly to the school the student will be attending. This scholarship is sponsored by the St. Petersburg Lions Club.

 

Emphasis is placed on scholastic aptitudes, character, reliability, and plans for continued education. The merit of the student is not influenced by race, sex, religion or financial status.

 

Please obtain a Pinellas County School Board form that ensures parents have given their permission regarding their child’s information being shared.
