Volunteers are needed to help us bind braille volumes for distribution to school children.
We also have projects like making chair seat back covers that will accommodate braille volumes for visually impaired students.
And, of course, we always need volunteers to learn and transcribe and record books for braille.
We are still working on this, but the idea is to pair a braille transcriber with a Teacher of the Visually Impaired to do work for that teacher specifically or for a specific student. The school system does not have enough people to produce all the braille that is needed for their students and we can help.
We are always accepting lightly used children's books for transcription and distribution to students throughout Florida. To drop books off or for pickup, please call Mary Klein at 727-418-8887.
Cash contributions go to our award program through the Mildred Shavlan Awards, given annually to Pinellas visually impaired students. Checks may be made to the Pinellas Braille Group and sent to the group c/o Temple Beth El, 400 Pasadena Avenue, St. Petersburg, FL 33707.
We also encourage donations to our Pinellas Braille Group Reserve Fund at the Community Foundation of Tampabay. You can contact them at: https://cftampabay.org or 727-777-5858.
